Mallika Sherawat (born October 24, 1981 as Reema Lamba) is an Indian actress and model from Hisar and Rohtak area of the state of Haryana. Sherawat was born Reema Lamba, but adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "empress", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema. "Sherawat" is her mother's maiden name, and adopting the name was an acknowledgement of her mother's support in making Reema an actress. She is infamously known for her controversial sex-related statements, and is the first Indian actress to work with Jackie Chan. She has a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University. In July 2004, the film producers' union IMPAA had banned Mallika from Bollywood, after a complaint filed by filmmaker Ramesh Sharma over breach of contract, and refusal to turn up on the dates committed for the film Kab Kyun Kahan (started in 1999). Mallika acquired a sex symbol tag after the film Murder (2004) in which she starred, became one of the most successful films of the year.
