  Unaccompanied Minors
Movie Review

Unaccompanied Minors (UK title: Grounded:Unaccompanied Minors) is a 2006 film directed by Paul Feig and starring Lewis Black, Wilmer Valderrama, Tyler James Williams, Dyllan Christopher, Brett Kelly, Gina Mantegna, and Quinn Shephard. Unaccompanied Minors has been rated PG by the MPAA for mild rude humor and language. It is based on a true story by Susan Burton first told on the public radio show This American Life.

On Christmas Eve, a huge blizzard shuts down the fictional Hoover International Airport. Six unaccompanied minors (UMs) are among the travellers left stranded by the blizzard. Of these two are siblings, Spencer Davenport (Dyllan Christopher) and his little sister Katherine (Dominique Saldana). All have divorced parents, and are travelling to go to the other parent, except rich girl Grace Conrad (Gina Mantegna). She hangs around the airport because she does not like to be at home with her nanny (her parents are not there). Also there is Timothy "Beef" Wellington (Brett Kelly), an overweight boy who is fond of playing with his superhero doll, aqua man, and the African American boy Charlie Goldfinch, (Tyler James Williams) who is very intelligent and loves Christmas (even though he's Jewish), and tomboy Donna Malone (Quinn Shephard). Spencer is embarrassed when Katherine tells Grace that Spencer's clothing has been bought at Kmart.

They are brought to the UM room, but since it is overcrowded five of the six (all except Katherine) leave the room without permission. They are outrunning and outwitting an airport official (Lewis Black) and his assistant (Wilmer Valderrama). When they get caught all the other unnaccompanied minors (including Katherine) have been transferred to a hotel, but they have to stay in the UM room again. They escape again. Beef goes into the woods to get a Christmas tree. Spencer, Grace, Charlie, and Donna get caught again and are now locked up in separate cells with surveillance cameras. Each records a short film with their walkie-talkies positioned next to the surveillance camera and then ties it to that with the display facing the camera. This allows them to escape throught vents in the ceiling without this being noticed. They go to the hotel chased by guards. They bring a present for Katherine, who believes in Santa Claus, while Beef brings a Christmas tree.
