The Women is 2008 American comedy film written and directed by Diane English. It is an updated adaptation of the 1939 George Cukor film of the same name, which was based on the 1936 play by Clare Boothe Luce. In the original film, most of the characters were Manhattan socialites whose primary interest was idle gossip. In the 2008 version, several are working in the fields of fashion design and publishing, and the character of Alex Fisher is openly lesbian.

The film, which was produced by Victoria Pearman and Mick Jagger of Jagged Films, Bill Johnson of Inferno Productions, and English, is being released by Picturehouse, a joint venture of HBO and New Line Cinema.

The central character is clothing designer Mary Haines, who lives in a beautiful country home with her wealthy financier husband and their 11-year-old daughter. Her best friend Sylvia Fowler is the editor of a prominent fashion magazine, a woman who dictates the latest in taste and style for New York City fashionistas. When Mary's husband becomes involved with Crystal Allen, a perfume salesgirl in Saks Fifth Avenue, her friendship with Sylvia is put to the test. Everyone in their close-knit circle of friends, including mother Edie Cohen and author Alex Fisher, begins to question their loyalty to each other and their romantic involvements.

According to a January 3, 2008, report on Entertainment Tonight, Diane English first began developing the remake in 1996 with Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts in mind. As time passed, the two actresses became involved in other projects and English herself put the film on the back burner. At one point, Sandra Bullock and Uma Thurman expressed interest. English returned to working on the film when Ryan became available. Filming began on August 21, 2007, and is now complete; the film is in post-production. It is scheduled to open in the US on September 12, 2008.

An upcoming issue of Vogue is scheduled to feature an article and photo layout with the principal cast members.

All portraits and sculptures of men were replaced for those of women when scenes were shot in the Boston Public Library.

An outdoor scene was filmed on Bullough's Pond in Newton, Massachusetts.

Candice Bergen plays Meg Ryan's mother in this film, just as she had in Ryan's feature-film debut 27 years earlier, in the 1981 film Rich and Famouswhich also by coincidence was a remake of another older film directed by George Cukor the director of the original film.

There are other ties between various cast members: Meg Ryan and Carrie Fisher shared the screen as best friends in When Harry Met Sally...; Candice Bergen guest starred with Debra Messing on Will & Grace; and Joanna Gleason played Bette Midler's best friend and manager on the short-lived TV series Bette.
