The Holiday is a 2006 romantic comedy film distributed by Columbia Pictures. The movie is set in California and England. It is directed by Nancy Meyers and stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black. The supporting cast includes Edward Burns, John Krasinski, Rufus Sewell, and Shannyn Sossamon. Despite being separated by the Atlantic Ocean, Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) share the same dilemma: they've both been disappointed by their significant others, Ethan (Edward Burns) and Jasper (Rufus Sewell), and are now facing a dull Christmas in isolation. After they meet online, however, they decide to join forces and give each other a hand. They will swap houses and lives for the holidays, hoping new experiences will result in less glum holiday depression. Amanda, a Los Angeles resident, will stay at Iris' home in rural England and Iris will live in Amanda's home in the States. While on holiday, each meets a new lover: Amanda falls for dashing Graham (Jude Law), while Iris finds herself attracted to quirky Miles (Jack Black). But where does the magic of the holiday end and the reality of real life begin? The film was partially filmed in Godalming, Surrey and the nearby villages of Wonersh and Shere, although for the purposes of the film the town was named "Shere". Michael Medved gave The Holiday three stars (out of four) calling the film "..lightweight, likeable..". Medved also said that it has "..strong chemistry among the stars and unusually well written characterization..". Mark Kermode gave the film one of his signature rants, at one point calling the film a chick flick that was an insult to women and that the film's version of Surrey "looks more like Narnia." Dan Hall scored the film as a poor two out of five stars, stating that "The dual narrative structure with two A List Hollywood stars battling for screen time means that Meyers attempts to cram far too much into one film with the resultant running time of 135 minutes hard to bear."
