Movie Review

Red State is an upcoming horror film written and directed by independent filmmaker Kevin Smith.

Though not announced yet, it has been said that it will include a Fred Phelps-like character as a villain. According to Smith, "It's certainly not Phelps himself but it's very much inspired by a Phelps figure... And to me, too, the notion of using a Phelps-like character as a villain, as horrifying and scary as that guy can be, there's even something more insidious than him that lurks out there in as much as a public or a government that allows it and that's the other thing that I'm trying to examine in a big, big way." "Red State" refers to a state which typically votes Republican, though Fred Phelps has ran as a Democrat several times for a variety of offices on both the state and federal level.

Smith has currently finished the script. He says, "It is the shortest script I've written at 87 pages". It is also the fastest script Smith has ever written, with the first draft being completed in five days. The first completed draft consisted of 96 pages on September 3, 2007. Recently Smith revealed in his blog at www.silentbobspeaks.com that the Weinstein Company have passed on the film, leaving Smith to find another source of funding. Bob & Harvey Weinstein had thus far been involved in distribution of all Kevin Smith films, with the exception of Mallrats. He has recently stated that another studio is interested in the film. Smith has also stated on many online postings and interviews that he has an intent of using unknowns for the roles in the movie. Many of his View Askew players may not be used in Red State.
