Movie Review

Pride and Glory is an upcoming American drama film directed by Gavin O'Connor and starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell. The film is slated to be released in March 14, 2008.

Ray Tierney (Norton) is a New York police officer who is part of a multi-generational police family. Tierney investigates a troublesome case that involves his older brother and brother-in-law, compelling the family to choose sides between their blood and the New York Police Department.

Director Gavin O'Connor wrote the script Pride and Glory with Joe Carnahan. O'Connor began writing the script in 1999 with his brother Greg O'Connor after completing Tumbleweeds. The O'Connor brothers wrote a story that was personal to both. Gavin O'Connor described their intent: "My father was a New York City detective, and I grew up in that world. It's a celebration of honest cops, which was everything my father was about. Though it is fictional, it is an homage to my father." Carnahan cited the September 11, 2001 attacks as a primary reason to delay production after the completion of the script, "There was a moment after 9/11 where the notion of doing what might be deemed an anti-cop film, particularly an attack of the NYPD, would be grounds for hanging." By December 2007, New Line Cinema became the studio for Pride and Glory as the production president Toby Emmerich had favored the script for several years. New Line cast Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, and Noah Emmerich into the film, the latter whom had starred in Gavin O'Connor's previous films, Tumbleweeds and Miracle. Production was slated to begin in New York City in January 2006, though it was delayed to February. Actor Nick Nolte was originally cast to portray the father in a family of cops, but due to a chronic knee injury becoming too severe, he was replaced by Jon Voight in the role.
