Open Water is a 2003 film inspired by a true story about American couple Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who in 1998 went with a scuba group (Outer Edge Dive Company) into the ocean, and were accidentally left behind when the boat departed. There were 26 other divers and 5 crew members who failed to notice that the couple were not onboard. Tagline: Who will save you? The story is told from the speculative point of view of the American couple, Daniel (Daniel Travis) and Susan (Blanchard Ryan), who are left behind in the ocean, somewhere in the tropics . The ensuing drama involves issues like: swimming for boats seen in the distance versus staying where they thought their boat should have picked them up going over the couple's previous marital disputes bouts of hunger and mental and physical exhaustion tension arising from jellyfish stings and circling sharks infesting the waters The movie is notable for using live sharks rather than mechanical sharks (as in Jaws) or computer-generated sharks (as in Deep Blue Sea). The movie strives to present authentic shark behavior rather than the stereotypical exaggeration common of movies that feature such predators. This movie was received with somewhat lukewarm reviews. |
