Movie Review

Madea's Family Reunion is a film adaptation of a play written by Tyler Perry and sequel to Diary of a Mad Black Woman. It was written and directed by Perry and features him playing several characters, including Madea. It was released on February 24, 2006.

After her sister's funeral, Madea hosts a family reunion in her backyard. She is getting acquainted with her 'high' granddaughter, a granddaughter and future grandson-in-law, and her know-it-all cousin.

Budget: $6 million

Total Gross: $47.7 million as of March 5, 2006

The Lions Gate produced independent film devoted to the life of a marijuana-smoking, gun-toting African American grandmother continues to be a huge financial success, despite playing in almost one-third less theaters than competing films from the Big Six. The reasoning, according to Steve Rothenberg, Lions Gate president of domestic distribution, is due to its unique market appeal, "I believe that we're in all the right theaters...I'm not sure there's much room for expansion." To illustrate the point, Lions Gate exit polls showed 52% of the audience were black women over the age of 35. The film grossed $30 million in its opening weekend - good enough for first place. It garnered a staggering $13,787 per theater, a number that nearly matched the initial release weekend average of Hollywood's last blockbuster, King Kong (2005). Lions Gate marketed directly to faith-based audiences and the film has enjoyed its first two weeks as the industry leader in box office receipts.
