Flatliners is a 1990 movie starring Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt as medical students experimenting with near-death experiences. Some medical students take turns temporarily killing each other, then bringing each other back to life, with the intent of simply "visiting" the Afterlife. They keep increasing the length that they are dead for, and eventually some of their perceived sins start literally coming back with them until their need for atonement is realised. The films depiction of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is inaccurate. The characters are repeatedly depicted using defibrillation to restart a heart that is in an asystolic (flatline) rhythm. When the heart is in this rhythm, it is already completely depolarised and so defibrillation would have no effect. Instead appropriate drugs would be utilised to try to restart the heart. Even with hospital care and experienced clinicians an asystolic rhythm is incompatible with life and very few people are ever successfully resuscitated from this rhythm. |
