Basic Instinct 2 is a film released on March 31, 2006. It stars Sharon Stone, reprising the character of Catherine Tramell that made her famous in 1992's Basic Instinct. The film was shot in London from April to August 2005. On February 6, 2006, several movies news websites started circulating a short leaked uncensored promotional reel showing scenes from the upcoming movie, which includes brief clips of several explicit love scenes in the movie. Two days after the uncensored promo reel began circulating, the official trailer debuted. On Sharon Stone's 48th birthday, March 10, 2006, several deleted NC-17 scenes from the film appeared online at BasicInstinct2.net. Like the original, the film was initally assigned an NC-17 rating by the MPAA; this was again because of the nudity, overt sexuality and graphic violence. One scene in particular was cited as the reason for the rating. At one point in the film, Sharon Stone's character is part of an orgy scene. Eventually the orgy scene was cut from the film and an R rating was obtained. According to an interview of David Morrissey by MTV in Novemeber 2005, the subsequent DVD release of the film should have all edited scenes restored. Europe will get the uncut version. The film has been in "development hell" for the better part of a decade. In 2000, the sequel was announced to be a March 2002 release. However casting for the male lead was long and troublesome, with male actors declining the role perhaps because of the level of nudity required. Eventually no acceptable male lead was cast before production was slated to start in 2001 and the project was cancelled. Stone immediately sued the producers for breach of contract. In 2004, just before the case was brought to trial, both sides settled for undisclosed terms. One condition of the settlement that was made public was that the movie would be made as originally planned. In April 2005, with the casting of David Morrissey as the male lead, the production began. As expected the film was almost universally panned by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes it earned a 6% fresh rating, meaning that out of 105 reviews, only 6 were positive. The film made a very poor debut and in the first weekend, it made a mere $3.2 million, placing it 10th in top grossing movies of the weekend. It tied Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector in ticket sales. To make matters worse, it was beaten out by a children's film, Ice Age: The Meltdown on opening day. |
